Yohji Yamamoto At Work

Friday, 10 June, 2011 - Saturday, 6 August, 2011

Fashion Space Gallery

In Yohji Yamamoto at Work curators Ligaya Salazar and Magdalene Keaney present an exhibition, which tells the life cycle of a single garment, a dark navy sleeveless pleated dress from his Autumn/Winter 2010-11 season, in reverse sequence from the finished article and the catwalk presentation through to the raw fabric in which Yamamoto’s design lies latent.
The exhibition is an opportunity to explore ideas of process, inspiration and journey in the work of Yohji Yamamoto and is designed to be an immersive and multi layered experience of creation rather than a literal guide to making a garment. The three suggested sections - presentation, construction and inspiration include original toiles, patterns and vintage pieces as well as photographic studies made backstage at Yohji shows and documentary images of his working studio in Japan.

"Often I tell my pattern makers, 'Just listen to the material. What is it going to say? Just wait. Probably the material will teach you something.'
